HelpDutiesThe successful candidate will perform the full range of Senior Health Physicist duties.
Such duties include but are not limited to Serves as a region-based senior inspector to lead, plan, conduct, report, and integrate findings associated with radiation protection inspections of decommissioning light-water reactors and materials facilities using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear material, in accordance with the NRC Inspection Manual.
Responsible for leading special team inspections.
Independently plans, schedules, and determines the scope of inspections to be performed personally or by a team.
Gathers necessary technical information from team members and from personal notes and observations.
Reviews allegation referral responses.
Makes technical judgements and conclusions regarding licensee performance.
Integrates inspection findings into overall licensee assessment.
Identifies issues that require enforcement decisions.
The incumbent will also act as a representative of the NRC while associating with licensees, media, and the public.

QualificationsIn order to qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following Knowledge of the application of principles, theories, and practices in the field of nuclear engineering, physics, mathematics or closely related discipline sufficient to evaluate operations and events involving use of nuclear materials in areas such as spent fuel storage & transportation packing, uranium recovery facilities, decommissioning materials and reactor facilities.
Ability to perform evaluations and analysis of radiological health hazards, radiation control programs, effluent controls and environmental monitoring programs, radiological procedures, and radiation detection systems/equipment at operating and/or decommissioning power reactor facilities; and/or materials facilities using byproduct, source and/or special nuclear material; and/or Independent Spent Fuel Storage Facilities (ISFSI).
Knowledge of the NRC regional materials, decommissioning and/or ISFSI programs, including licensing, inspection, enforcement and allegation practices, policies, techniques and standards.
Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, and to coordinate with other NRC offices, other government agencies, the public, the press and industry groups varied complex and sometimes controversial technical problems.
Ability to lead, mentor, and coach other assigned inspectors.
Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrates experience in the technical aspects of NRC programs and policies and inspections relating to programs that require work with radiological safety technology, including radiation physics and dosimetry, with particular emphasis on the use of ionizing radiation in medicine and industry.
Candidates should also have recent experience associated with a regulatory program focused on safety.

natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus,orB.
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In general, employees are expected to be in the office at a minimum of 4 days per pay period.
