Vehicle Description 1983 Chevrolet Camaro In the world of muscle cars and sports cars manufacturers often team up with third parties to create a modified special edition option.
This may be performance options, cosmetic options or a combination of both.
Many people are familiar with things like Shelby for Mustangs, SLP for Camaros, and Lingenfelter for Corvettes.
Well this isn't just a modern thing (or continuous thing for Shelby) but all throughout the 70's and 80's this trend continued with some more unknown companies.
One example is the unique Auto Form Camaros like the 1 you see here.
The company was based out of Elkhart, Indiana and teamed up with GM to do convertible conversions on both Firebirds and Camaros.
Once a customer ordered one of these special editions the car would be shipped directly to Auto Form where it was modified and then sent off to the dealer for delivery to the customer.
The year by year production is unknown but it is thought that approximately 600 total were built between 1983 and 1986 which includes both Firebirds and Camaros.
The conversion itself took about 2 weeks long and cost around $5,500 which cost $16,160 in todays dollars.
The Auto Form conversion was primarily cosmetic with a goal of offering the car as a convertible while retaining the structural integrity of the original unibody and chassis design.
This way you can still have the handling of the original sports car with the convertible look.
They did this by removing the tops and creating a hatch in the rear to conceal the cloth top.
The would also add heavy gauge steel bars to the chassis, installed an X-member and installed a steel cage assembly to the door pillars and floor panels.
This '83 Z28 is one of those estimated 600 cars and is in good shape.
It is a 2 owner car with the original owner having it for 25 years after receiving it from the dealership.
The Yellow paint is in good condition and with the conversion received the unique rear hinged fiberglass panel with headrest fairings.
It rides on its original 5 spoke Z28 wheels with Goodyear Eagle 1 Nascar tires.
Under the hood is its original 305 V8 motor with cross fire injection system.
It is combined with a smooth shifting 4 speed automatic and the car runs out great.
It has power brakes with discs up front and also power steering.
The car has its original Beige and Black cloth upholstery which is in good shape.
It has all its factory options like air conditioning, cruise control, power locks, power windows, and a cd player which are working properly.
Underneath the rear hatch is the manual convertible top as well as a storage section which houses the spare.
Take it home for only $12,900.
